A 4.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday about 150 kilometres west of Vancouver Island’s northern tip, at a depth of about 10 kilometres.
Natural Resources Canada seismologist John Cassidy said the event was not unusual — earthquakes of that magnitude happen in the area several times a year.On the same date in 1918, Cassidy said, a 7.0-magnitude quake struck Vancouver Island’s west coast and caused damage in some communities. Strong shaking was felt in Victoria and Vancouver, and as far away as the Interior and northern Washington state.
