Mayor John Tory wants Toronto bars to get the ball rolling earlier during the World Cup.
In a statement released Wednesday, Tory’s office said he supports extending alcohol service hours during the international soccer tournament as a way to help local businesses. It said the mayor believes that while World Cup is on bars and restaurants should be able to start pouring pints at 8 a.m., one hour earlier than usual, and he plans to bring the issue to council next Thursday for “immediate” approval.
Tory’s office said it consulted city staff and “there were no issues” when council extended service hours for past World Cups. He’s urging residents to “visit their favourite restaurants and bars to watch the World Cup and support our local businesses.” Tory’s plan to bring the 8 a.m. service start to council on Nov. 24 means the extension would go into effect the next day, and won’t be approved in time for the start of the tournament this Sunday.
Rocco Mastrangelo Jr., owner of Café Diplomatico on College Street, was among those who had been calling on council to implement extended hours during the tournament. He said Tory’s support for the proposal was great news for his bar, which typically draws big crowds during the World Cup.
