Moore issued a new appeal for mask wearing in indoor social settings to slow the spread of viruses like flu, RSV and COVID-19 that are sending kids to emergency rooms.

Ontario’s chief medical officer issued a new appeal for mask wearing in indoor social settings as well as indoor public spaces to slow the spread of respiratory viruses like flu, RSV andthat are sending young children to hospital emergency rooms a double or triple the usual rate.

“What can be a cold to you can lead to a severe respiratory infection in someone four or under,” Dr. Kieran Moore told a news conference Monday, noting half the critically ill children on ventilors at Sick Kids Hospital have flu and the other half RSV.There is no mandatory mask mandate — although one could be coming — because the viruses are spreading in homes and social settings where “mandates have not worked well in the past” since they are impossible to enforce, Moore added.

The rate of flu has shot up almost 50 per cent in the last week, with 14.5 per cent of samples now testing positive. Just over six per cent of samples are testing positive for “highly contagious” RSV and COVID tests are down slightly but remain high at 14.2 per cent.
