For many months, across Canada, emergency departments have closed temporarily, and physicians and nurses have retired prematurely. | SaltWire
Bruce MacKinnon's editorial cartoon for Nov. 27, 2019.In late September, staffing shortages forced the temporary closing of the ER at Victoria County Memorial Hospital in Baddeck. The Chesley Hospital in southwestern Ontario just announced that its ER would close until December.
After a cut in the early 1990s, medical and nursing school enrolment is increasing. This past year, Nova Scotia recruited 163 physicians, resulting in a net gain of 95 MDs. The licensing of foreign graduates is being fast-tracked across Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador is even offering $100,000 to doctors who were born, educated or had practised in the province if they return and agree to work for at least five years.
However, we need another incentive to keep older physicians working as long as possible. I propose government-funded short-term income stabilization. I therefore propose that Nova Scotia and other provinces and territories, if they are serious about utilizing senior physicians as much as possible, provide the following:
Like nurses, physicians have been termed “health-care heroes” by politicians. It is time for provincial governments and for colleges of physicians and surgeons to translate these platitudes into financial benefits such as reduced annual licence fees and short-term income stabilization. These will help to keep older physicians in the workforce — even part-time. They can then continue to provide patients with much-needed expertise that only comes with many years of experience.
