The city is asking the provincial and federal governments to pick up more than $180 million in hosting costs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup games.
took a kicking on Wednesday, when Premier Doug Ford revealed the province has yet to decide whether to help the city shoulder the cost of the international soccer tournament.
When asked by reporters whether Ontario will pay a portion of the more than $180 million in hosting costs the city is asking the provincial and federal governments to pick up, the premier was noncommittal. The premier said he’s a “big soccer fan” and the province is still considering the city’s request. But he cited the event’s growing price tag as a serious concern.“We’ll look at the finances and hopefully we’ll be able to come up with an answer sooner than later.
The city has already spent more than $400,000 on the World Cup project. Plans to spend millions more come as city hall is facing a huge budget shortfall, thanks in part to lingering effects of COVID-19. The June city report noted that lack of firm funding commitments from the province and feds remained “an immediate risk,” but staff said both governments had “provided strong indications that they will support Toronto’s participation.”
