Throughout the pandemic, Toronto diners have become more comfortable eating alone, both inside their homes and out in restaurants. Now, a new spot in Baldwin Village not only encourages you to dine by yourself, it expects you to.
Many people consider “table for one” to be a sad phrase, but it doesn’t have to be.
“Everything here – the atmosphere, the music, the service, even the food – it’s all just background,” said chef and co-owner Andy Su, who recently launched the restaurant with his wife, Jane Yu. “It’s there to let you have a conversation with yourself.” A framed QR code brings you to the menu. A circular set of buttons sitting on a napkin holder has options for “Bill,” “Call” and “Water.” You can also order and pay online.Netflix or YouTube while you eat. Or you can remove your earbuds and soak in the meditative ambiance: the chilled-out jazz and trip-hop playing over the speakers, the wafting scent of chili and vinegar, the hushed tones of a host showing someone to their seat. My pulse slows.
