Although he would be viewed as a strong contender from the start, Layton said that he had decided against a campaign after talking it over with his family. Layton, son of Toronto councillor, mayoral candidate and federal NDP leader Jack Layton who died in 2011, said there are choices in a city as wealthy as Toronto, including opting to address the widening inequality among its citizens.
“We can work to ensure everyone has the services they need to live with dignity,” he said. “A better Toronto is possible and this election is an opportunity to elect a mayor who can help move us in this direction.”The office of mayor became vacant last month after John Tory resigned just four months into his third term.Candidates have between April 3 and May 12 to register to run.
