Greater Sudbury, the birthplace of Day of Mourning, hosts two ceremonies to push for workers’ rights and workplace safety
Sudbury's labour community stood together Friday to observe a moment of silence and to talk about the importance of continuing the fight for worker safety.
“Prevention is key. Workers and their families deserve to know that they are entering a safe worksite that they will return home after their shift, healthy and well," said the mayor.Professor Alison Godwin of the Laurentian University School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences commented that Northern Ontario workers have a unique situation when it comes to workplace injuries.
"We have a challenge ahead of us. As a community that works and plays in the North together, we need to protect one other, work towards healthier workplaces and viable solutions that will ease the burden of death and disease for all." West reminded the group it wasn't that long ago that worker safety was not protected by the laws we have today.
