Danielle Smith reveals plan to give eligible Albertans $600 — with more inflation-fighting help for others

Albertans won’t see the province do what it did in 2006 under Premier Ralph Klein — when three million people got a one-time $400 “prosperity” payout — despite some hypothesizing to the contrary on social media this week.

“As a province, we can’t solve this inflation crisis on our own,” Smith said. “But due to our strong fiscal position and balanced budget, we can offer substantial relief so Albertans and their families are better able to manage through this storm.” Families with children under 18 will receive $600 per child and seniors will also be eligible. Albertans on the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped or the Persons with Developmental Disabilities programs will also get the payout.

The price tag for the swath of spending is expected to be $2.4 billion, the premier’s press secretary, Rebecca Polak, confirmed. That act, up until this week, was called simply the Alberta Sovereignty Act by Smith and those around her. It is to be her first bill introduced in the Alberta legislature, set to resume on Nov. 29, and will somehow allow Alberta to skirt enforcing federal laws it deems unconstitutional, according to Smith.

“Through equalization and transfers, they funnel billions of your tax dollars away from you and into a black hole of federal bureaucracy and vote buying arrangements in other parts of the country.”“What we just heard was Danielle Smith claiming she’s going to undo the affordability crisis that the UCP government has actually contributed to by reversing many of their own bad decisions,” said Notley, seemingly referring to some of the reindexing measures announced.
