Premier has made significant changes including with naming of two deputy premiers, while naming Travis Toews as finance minister.
EDMONTON—Premier of Alberta Danielle Smith has made her first big move after taking the reins earlier this month by naming two deputy premiers in Kaycee Madu and Nathan Neudorf, alongside five fellow leadership contestants who just weeks before were vying for the job she now holds.
“What we saw was the politicization of public health by left-leaning political parties and operators who saw it as an opportunity for their so-called ‘great reset’ ,” wrote Madu in a Western Standard column in August, “and radical control that led to unprecedented violations of our citizens’ privacy and fundamental human rights and freedoms.”
Brian Jean, another front-runner in the UCP leadership race, will enter cabinet as minister for jobs, the economy and northern development. Todd Loewen, closest in political ideology to Smith out of the UCP leadership contestants, will also be in cabinet as minister of forestry, tourism and parks. “Mr. Speaker, the guy just called me a f---ing liar in the middle of the damn legislature,” Nixon said, prompting the Speaker to rebuke him for his language.Nixon will now sit as a backbench MLA, but his younger brother, Jeremy Nixon, has been promoted to a cabinet position overseeing seniors, social services and community. Mike Ellis will serve as minister of public safety, a newly created position.
After pledging for months that she’d be clearing the table of health-care managers and reforming Alberta Health Services from the top down, Smith decided to keep Jason Copping overseeing the health ministry.
