“I think they’re playing games,” Smith said at a news conference in Calgary. “It is an election, I think that there are some ideological voices on that council. It’s no secret that the NDP and their fellow travellers want to defund the police. And it’s no secret that we are in the position that we’re in right now because it has demoralized our front-line officers and they haven’t felt supported — and they are supported by us.

In December, the provincial government passed Bill 6, the Police Amendment Act, that gave the province the ability to include three of its own selections to the 12-person police commission in Calgary, and inclusion on other municipal police commissions.
