In a news release, Public Health said test results Friday confirmed that both individuals had the same strain of the bacteria, called serogroup B. So far no connection has been made between the two cases other than both students lived in the same building, which is home to 440 students. Public Health is investigating whether there is a direct link.

“This form of bacterial meningitis is not spread through the air or casual contact, such as sitting next to or talking with someone who is sick with the disease.” Meningococcal disease refers to any illness caused by bacteria called Neisseria meningitidis. It is spread by saliva or spit from the nose and mouth through activities such as kissing and sharing of food, drinks, water bottles, toothbrushes, eating utensils, cigarettes and other smoking products and devices.

A memorandum from Rick Ezekiel, Dalhousie’s vice-provost of student affairs, on the university’s website said that those who live at the residence or who primarily work there, as well as anyone identified as close contacts, have already been contacted by Public Health.
