Speaker of the House Keith Bain presides during the fall session of the Nova Scotia legislature at Province House in Halifax. - Eric Wynne / Chronicle HeraldThe Progressive Conservative government should cut provincial gas taxes immediately to help struggling Nova Scotians, says a Cape Breton Liberal.
Fred Tilley, the Liberal MLA for Northside-Westmount in Cape Breton, says the Progressive Conservative government has 'all the tools' to help struggling Nova Scotians right now. - Contributed Tilley said Ontario, Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador, among others, have all made significant cuts to the motive fuel tax, with Ontario making two cuts of an 11-cent total reduction.
The price of a litre of self-serve regular gasoline at the pumps in Nova Scotia on Monday was, at minimum, just more than $1.80 and a litre of diesel fuel came in at a whopping price of just under $2.62. “We saw the prices really start to spike when Russia invaded Ukraine,” the minister said. “This is a problem that everybody around the world is dealing with. What we can control in this country is not putting forth a carbon tax to further hurt people at the gas pump.”
“The provincial government keeps talking about things they’ve done like the seniors care grant and increasing income assistance by $150, which are all great things,” Tilley said of replies from the government side during question period and debates during the fall session. Tilley said $20 million of that surplus came from the increased haul in motive fuel taxes as world prices escalated.
