Velma Acorn spends every holiday season baking and decorating. But after getting diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in September, she hasn’t had the energy to do much extra. So, this year, her family and the community decided to surprise her.

I can’t even keep up with all the messages. “I didn’t think it would reach this many people. I can’t even keep up with all the messages. And people have donated money for me to go and buy decorations. … It’s been incredible.”Tourout and Acorn have been close all of Tourout’s life. When she was in high school and living in Charlottetown, for example, Tourout struggled with stomach problems. She would call Acorn late at night and, despite Acorn living in Belle River, she always came to help, Tourout said.
