Results of a major trial of the medication have cast new doubt over a deal to purchase and manufacture the COVID drug molnupiravir
There is no significant effect
Both medications surfaced last year as potential breakthrough treatments, oral medication that could be taken by high-risk outpatients at home, and lessen the virus’s burden on health care. The Oxford University-led Panoramic trial, its results published online last week but not yet peer-reviewed, compared two arms of about 12,500 patients in the U.K. who either got the usual care plus molnupiravir, or just the usual care.
Barr noted that the overall number of hospitalizations and deaths in the study were small — less than one per cent — given that 99 per cent of patients had at least one dose of vaccine and 94 per cent were triple-vaccinated. And he pointed to some more detailed data in the Panoramic study that indicated patients over 80, plus those with heart disease and diabetes were less likely to die or end up in hospital on the drug.
