In response to the report, Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro said in a Friday statement his UCP government maintains Ottawa “set a dangerous precedent” by invoking the act, charging inadequate consultation with provinces. When reached Saturday, Coutts Mayor Jim Willett declined to comment on the report, citing a decision at a January village council meeting for elected officials to no longer speak publicly about the protest.Article contentHe said though he opposed the blockade himself, he estimated about 70 per cent of village residents were in favour of the protest, a division that has had lasting effects on the community.
He added the entrenched nature of protesters increased the likelihood of police enforcement action, placing those present — including children at some sites — at risk of violent confrontation.
