A survey of Greater Sudbury city council regarding the city’s strategic plan reveals they’re mostly on board with the city’s existing goals, but are divided on whether they believe some of them are being tackled appropriately, most notably when it comes to economic development
It appears the City of Greater Sudbury has been falling short when it comes to spurring economic growth in the region.
“There have been successes, but certainly there’s a lot more potential for more success, which is what I think that survey lends itself to saying. We can do more, we can be more.” The 17-per-cent figure jumps out of a survey regarding the city’s 2019-2027 strategic plan. In the survey, city councillors indicated whether they support the plan’s various objectives, and whether they believe the city is taking sufficient actions on each of them.
The plan, city CAO Ed Archer told city council, “defines your change agenda,” and comprises “larger context changes you’re interested in seeing fulfilled for the community.” Among these recommendations was that the city reach out to local post-secondary institutions for help, as “they are the seed to all the qualified workers required for these new jobs.”
Only 66 per cent of respondents believed the city is doing enough to support ecological sustainability and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Half of respondents believe climate resiliency has been adequately built into existing programs.
