Record-breaking, early-May heat throughout much of the province has the concern of multiple experts over Alberta's wildfire outlook.
In recent days, fire restrictions and outright bans have proliferated throughout the province’s north. But in the south and around Calgary, counties and municipalities have mainly chosen fire advisories which don’t prohibit open blazes.
Local governments should be implementing more fire bans in the province, said an expert in fire risk reduction and restoration. Exactly seven years ago, Mandeville was in Fort McMurray during a massive wildfire that destroyed 2,400 structures and forced 88,000 people to flee — a disaster he said should colour preparations to fight and prevent future ones.
Flannigan agreed, saying climate change has led to increasingly parched conditions and longer fire seasons.
