Nigel Jenkins, Rotary Arts Centre bringing new life to Broadway
Local artist manager and record label owner Nigel Jenkins is converting a building on Broadway in Corner Brook into an arts hub. The Rotary Arts Centre is a partner and tenant in the project. - Diane Crocker/SaltWire NetworkCORNER BROOK, N.L — It was a bank and later a cannabis retail store, and now 62 Broadway in Corner Brook is about to take on another identity as an arts hub.
“And for me, becoming a bigger part or more active member and participant in the arts community broadly in the region is a motivating factor,” he said of his plans for the arts hub. The idea for the arts hub came about as he looked for a space that would allow him to expand his business and hire more staff locally.
Jenkins saw potential in the space for what he had in mind and also for the Rotary Arts Centre, which will be a partner in the project and a tenant in the downstairs space.“And it works perfectly for the kind of co-working office space environment that I always wanted to have in the building.” The roughly 3,800-square-foot lower level occupied by the Rotary Arts Centre will function as a multidisciplinary art space. It won’t have a live performance space like its city hall location, but Jenkins said some visual arts and other presentations, like readings, could very well take place there.
There will be an audio/visual recording room, an instrument library, a place to make pottery, space for a loom to weave cloth and do quilting, artists’ studios like those at the city hall location and a wet room, where people can paint and not worry about getting it on the floor.
