'We are fighting for roles and responsibilities as academic staff members that will ensure Memorial University is recognized as a thriving, not surviving institution,' writes MUNFA member Christine Arnold.
The MUNFA picket line at Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook on Thursday, Feb. 2. - Diane Crockeris not a new phenomenon across Canadian universities. However, this issue has reached a breaking point at Memorial University and contractual faculty members require improved contract length for term appointments, conversion language from contractual to tenure-track appointments, and right of first refusal provisions.
An increased reliance on contractual faculty with limited support and security for these valued members of our community is disparaging for everyone. These members deserve more. We deserve more as tenure-track and tenured faculty members. These precarious sources are relied on to maintain accessibility services, career services, counselling services, health and wellness services, Indigenous services, international services, and orientation and leadership programming, which all students access during their educational careers.
These health and safety hazards should be violations. Stained and eroded ceiling tiles, archaic elevators covered in fingerprints from students manually opening them after malfunctions, water-filled hoses hanging from ceilings draining into plastic containers, and deteriorating building materials should be remedied.
