Canada remains the only G7 country without a federal investment in school food programs
. This group of more than 240 non-profit member organizations is calling on the federal government to make good on their promise in the 2023 budget, expected at the end of this month.
At the end of 2021, Prime Minister Trudeau tasked two federal ministers with creating a school food policy and program. Ministers Karina Gould and Marie-Claude Bibeau and their teams conductedwith a wide range of stakeholders, including school food providers, local food producers, provincial and territorial governments and Indigenous leaders.
We have a vibrant sector of community organizations working on school food who are ready to step up and work with governments to create something bigger. We have schools all over the region — especially in rural communities — reaching out daily to those organizations, looking to get programs started.
This change is underway just as our region emerges, more and more, as a leader in creative social policy. From Newfoundland and Labrador’s Health Accord to P.E.I.’s work on basic income, provinces in Atlantic Canada are leading the way in rethinking our social support systems. A truly universal, federally funded school food program would fit right in.
