Nova Scotia isn't contemplating a return to mandatory masking measures amid a spike in respiratory disease in the province. - Ryan Taplin / FileIt will take a collective effort to stem the tide of respiratory viruses that threatens to overwhelm Nova Scotia hospitals, an infectious diseases expert says.
Hospitals in Nova Scotia and across Canada have been hit with a wave of respiratory viruses such as RSV , which mainly affects children, and rhinoviruses that cause the common cold. Barrett said the trend of an early spike in the number and severity of cases in Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada reflects what’s happened in southern hemisphere countries such as Australia, which have already gone through their flu seasons.
While stopping short of issuing a mandatory order, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health Dr. Kieran Moore on Monday “strongly” recommended people mask indoors given the triple threat of the flu, RSV and COVID-19.“From a science, infectious disease and a virus perspective, when you have three viruses becoming extremely common and needing to reduce their impact, masks are a tool that are still very important along with the vaccines, testing and staying home when you’re sick,” Barrett said.
