City of Toronto report plans for changes to CafeTO to make it permanent

The report recommends returning to the existing requirement of constructing temporary platforms in curb lane café permit areas to ensure curb lane cafés are fully accessible, and to increase safety near on-street patios and address concerns about equitable program access.In addition to the one-time application fee, the city said a permit fee to participate in CafeTO will be an annual fee that will be the same across all areas of the city.
It also notes that the curb lane areas will be allowed from May 15 to Oct. 15 instead of previously when it began on April 14 and lasted until Nov. 15. All fencing must be removed by the permit holders outside of the amended time frame.The number of businesses using CafeTO increased year-over-year as Torontonians seek dining in more outdoor spaces. In 2020 there were 801 businesses participating, 2021 saw 1,213 and in 2022 there were 1,327 businesses.
