THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay will officially call on the Ford government to take a number of significant actions, including decriminalizing simple drug possession, to confront a worsening overdose crisis that has hit the city perhaps harder than any other in the province.
The council vote put the city’s support behind a package of policy positions outlined by the Drug Strategy Network of Ontario , which represents 41 local drug strategy groups across the province, including the one led by the City of Thunder Bay. The DSNO is also calling on the province to regularly publish comprehensive real-time data on drug poisonings and related indicators, as well as government targets to reduce mortality.
Where morphine and methadone had previously accounted for a majority of the city’s fatal drug poisonings, by 2018, fentanyl was present in 90 per cent of deaths – and was driving the total number of overdoses far higher. “While we have a wide range of harm reduction, treatment, prevention and community safety programs [and] services available in our community, we continue to experience gaps in service and underfunded programs,” the memo states.
In an interview Monday, she said that will go beyond just sending letters, with city leaders continuing to build consensus with other communities and pushing provincial representatives to respond.
