The diesel-powered buses are to be phased out of service gradually as each of them reaches the end of its life cycle, with OC Transpo targeting a fully zero-emission fleet by 2036. That would lag behind a pledge Sutcliffe made during his successful 2022 mayoral campaign to phase out the city’s gas-powered fleet and make it fully electric or hybrid by 2030.Article content
City council is expected to consider the “budget authority requests” to begin the procurement of the new zero-emission buses and charging infrastructure at its meeting next Wednesday. The city unveiled its first electric buses in November, saying those vehicles would be introduced into service in 2022. However, they were not fully electric as they came equipped with industry-standard diesel auxiliary heating systems that were to be used to keep the buses warm in cold weather, extending the range of the electric propulsion systems.
