The city’s elected officials will vote on whether to extend the Safe Harbour House and SACY NEST emergency shelter programs, using federal funding, during the April 17 emergency services committee meeting
With provincial funding running dry, the city is poised to tap into federal funding to keep two emergency shelter programs totalling 24 beds in operation.
The two programs were funded by the province during the COVID-19 pandemic, but that funding expired on Dec. 31, 2022. Between the two shelter programs, 14 new shelter beds and 10 overnight warming spaces were added to the 35 shelter beds at the Off the Street Shelter, operated by the CMHA, and 26 beds at Cedar Place Women and Families Shelter operated by the Salvation Army.
