The deputy prime minister and finance minister made the comments amid speculation about whether any of the Liberal party’s 25 Liberal MPs will run to replace Tory if he resigns as announced.
Liberal MPs who spoke to the Star on Wednesday didn’t go that far, but some lamented Tory’s looming departure and praised him for his leadership as mayor since 2014.
Etobicoke—Lakeshore MP James Maloney acknowledged that his own name is coming up as a potential candidate. He called that flattering, but said it’s too early to think seriously about such a move, especially since Tory has not even resigned yet. Judy Sgro, the Liberal MP for Humber River—Black Creek, said Tory was a “great” mayor and expressed regret that he said he will step down, even though she believes he has no other choice.
