Our system of government with the Crown at the top tells us where we came from

. It shows us that we have a deep history — steeped in more than a millennium of conflict, turmoil, vibrant and sometimes bizarre personalities, reform, and continuity. We came from someplace.

The bizarre ostentatious traditions of parliament and the monarchy symbolize that Canada has a deep history rooted in our colonial origins. What is most unique about that history is the way we moved — more peacefully than almost any other country — from an age of monarchs and aristocracy into an era of democracy. We did so with almost no violent revolution. We won our system of government while holding fast to some traditions while adapting them to new circumstances.

The great success of the British Westminster style of government — we can equally say the Canadian Westminster form of government — is the long erratic history of restraining the power of the Crown and the way the system gradually — over centuries — created a balanced constitution that gave more and more power to the people.

These events used to be a staple of Canadian classrooms. Think of the way the Norman Kings after the conquest of England in 1066 adopted the Common Law. They did so in order to legitimize their own authority — but in the process ceded power to the traditions in England. They reinforced the idea that law comes before rulers — that there is such a thing as the rule of law.

There is the Magna Carta from 1215 where the Lords of England forced King John to cede rights to his lords and to freeborn Englishmen. The Magna Carta has been invoked again and again as a symbolic cudgel to bash authorities who wield power too vigorously. We also have the rise of parliament and a separate House of Commons in the 14th century. All of these events — so distant now — are a part of Canadian history.
