Chorney-Booth: New cookbook lays out the story of Alberta’s culinary identity yyc
The book’s recipes are structured by season, but since we know that the traditional four seasons can be unpredictable in these parts, she breaks up the year in a way that better reflects life on the prairies with sections like “The Long, Dark, and Deep Winter,” “Cabin Fever Season,” and “Harvest Hurry-Up,” as well as a chapter on entertaining and feasting, with recipes suitable for everything from Ukrainian and Easter celebrations to Lunar New Year and Eid dinners.
Eat Alberta First will be released by Touchwood Editions on April 25 and should be available wherever you like to buy books. The launch party to be held at Cookbook Company Cooks on April 26 is sold out, but that store has plenty of copies of the book available for purchase. And, for a more interactive Alberta food experience, Anderson’s Alberta Food Tours are launching back up. The company’s popular Calgary Farmers’ Market tour is returning at the end of May, with a brunch tour that will take participants through a dozen vendors at that West location of the market, with food and drink samples along the way. Admission to the tour is $100 per person and includes a light seated brunch and lots of information and stories about the market.
L’Heureux is not a newcomer to the game, having started brewing in his parents’ basement as a late teen. He opened the first Craft in 2011 and has expanded operations to Edmonton, Vancouver, Kelowna, Victoria, Ottawa, and Toronto. Wherever they are, the bars support Canada’s small brewing industry as each location has a minimum of 100 taps.
