The yellow book was called Songs and Poetry from Gold Mountain. Printed in China in the 1920s, it contains heartbreaking songs and poems by Chinese immigrants about their lives in Gold Mountain, the Chinese nickname for British Columbia in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The biggest and most prominent Chinese societies built or purchased buildings in Vancouver’s Chinatown, often in the 1910s and 1920s. Twelve society buildings now form the foundation for the Chinatown heritage district.
The Yan Society wasn’t officially registered until 1986, but the Yans found a ledger at 518 East Cordova that shows the society was operating in 1925. Andy Yan’s great-grandfather Kwok Yam Yan — known as Charlie — immigrated to Canada from Hoi Ping, China, in the 1910s, although no one is sure just when.Article content
