Envoy urged attendees of an event to support council bid of a director of two organizations now accused of having ties to Chinese police stations, article says.
A diplomat from China urged people at an event in Montreal to support the city council bid of a director of two organizations now being investigated by the RCMP, according to a Chinese-language newspaper article from 2017.
Other officials, including local Liberal MP Alexandra Mendès, were also reportedly in attendance. In a statement to the Star, Mendès said she was not aware of any such comments, as they were likely made in Mandarin, a language she does not speak. The article says the event with the deputy consul general took place at the Chinese Family Service of Greater Montreal location, one of two organizations of which Li is now director.
Bian, the deputy consul general quoted in the story, is now the deputy consul of the Chinese consulate in Chicago, according to its website. Neither the Chicago consulate nor the one in Montreal responded to request for comment from the Star. Saint-Jacques said that when he was posted in the United States he would not have endorsed any sort of political representative because it would be considered inappropriate.
