Port Morien, Donkin and area resident have seen an increase in deteriorating pavement along Long Beach Road in Port Morien, along a route used for coal transport from nearby Donkin Mine. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTPORT MORIEN — A dedicated roadway for large trucks transporting coal to and from Donkin Mine would at least cut down on area residents’ safety concerns, the chair of a Cape Breton community group concluded.

Port Morien resident Norma Peach speaks during a Sunday afternoon community meeting in Port Morien:"I bet you a school bus driver isn’t allowed to break any rules that some of these truck drivers do." IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST“You can easily see the deterioration of the road is hacked pretty badly,” said Thomas, adding that on countless occasions he would notice pieces of coal flying out from trucks whenever they hit these road cracks.

“It’s just a matter of time before we see more trucks going through,” Thomas said. “But we’re not dealing with the mine at all. They run the show and we don’t. They seem to dictate how many trucks are on the road and what size .” Peach also said she was “disappointed” that not one government official from the municipal, provincial or federal level dropped in for the meeting.Fergusson said she did extend invitations to both Cape Breton MPs Mike Kelloway and Jaime Battiste, Cape Breton East MLA Brian Comer, Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor Amanda McDougall and Deputy Mayor James Edwards, whose district includes Donkin and Port Morien.

Donkin Mine community liaison committee member Claude Peach, shown with Cow Bay Environmental Coalition chair Catherine Fergusson:"At this point, they’re sitting on that bypass road waiting to put traffic lights in," Peach said. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTEdwards confirmed with the Cape Breton Post that he and the mayor spent part of a day travelling through the affected areas of Long Beach Road, Route 255 and through Donkin highway.
