Immigrants needed in the work force due to aging population, census also shows 41,600 of Sault residents identify as Christian
Immigrants make up nearly a quarter of all people in Canada according to Statistics Canada in newly released 2021 census data.
Locally, places of birth for the recent immigrant population listed within the 2021 census show that many immigrants are coming to the Sault from Nigeria, India, Syria, China and The Philippines. The Sault’s population in 2021, according to census results, was 72,051, down by 1.8 per cent from 73,368 in 2016. 17,930 people or nearly 25 per cent of the population are age 65 and over.
As a result newcomers have been welcomed to make up for a low birth rate among domestic Canadians and to enter the work force.
