SYDNEY, N.S. — Emergency department nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital don't see their concerns addressed by Nova Scotia Health strategies for ...

"It's not addressing any actual problems," the emergency department nurse said after Wednesday's announcement."It's PR mumbo jumbo that I feel is meant to appease the public into thinking things will actually change."Another nurse spoke about the addition of patient care advocates, who aren't health-care professionals. They are people who will check on patients waiting to be examined after being triaged, and who will ensure patient comfort.

Dr. Margaret Fraser, an emergency department physician at Cape Breton Regional Hospital told the Post she thinks the"ideas sound great on paper" but she's not sure they'll solve the problems. However, there are challenges to getting the nursing staff needed to get these roles filled. These include finding ways to retain staff and ensuring they hire new grads before they are lured into contracts out of province.

"The union tried to negotiate $2 an hour and free parking and snacks off the care cart to the IWK nurses and the government said no," said one nurse. "There are a variety of retention strategies being worked on at this time and costed out ... this is the beginning of many kinds of retention and recruitment strategies that will be coming forward in the not-too-distant future."

The emergency department nurses at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital feel their concerns haven't been addressed.
