Getting transportation to the disaster sites he's worked at has never been a problem before. Born in Halifax, Copp spent most of his adult life in California and would walk into an airline office to speak with someone to get the flight booked at no cost. Photos of Doug Copp on rescue missions line the walls along the steps of his Sydney home, memories of the 896 collapsed buildings he climbed through to saves thousands of lives. NICOLE SULLIVAN/CAPE BRETON POST - Nicole SullivanCopp was working in building demolition when he began working on rescue missions. His first was in the 1980s in Mexico.

This was the start of his career and Copp's reputation grew internationally. To date, he's done rescue missions in 54 countries. In 2002, Copp decided to come back to Nova Scotia and had his nephew drive him and his motorhome to Cape Breton. "There are going to be aftershocks and buildings could come down for weeks after," he said."I'd rather be squashed trying to help save lives than to sit on my ass and watch these guys die."An interview request with Air Canada wasn't granted. The media team sent a written statement via email.
