From fiddler to counsellor
Cape Breton fiddler Howie MacDonald is shown at his home in Westmount. The music room where he is sitting will become office space for his Celtic Counselling business, which is a new career path since concluding his masters in counselling psychology. GREG MCNEIL/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — After decades of being heard on stages near and far, it’s Howie MacDonald’s turn to listen as the well-known Cape Breton fiddler embarks on a second career as a counsellor.
“Cape Bretoners, you want to help people. When people are down and out, Maritimers, I suppose, are the people that want to help out and put their best foot forward. I guess it is an extension of all that, an extension of how you were brought up.” “Howie is a very kind person and he is very deep. He jokes a lot, as we know, but he is very deep and very generous,” she said.
A trip to his place on Monday to help get his office ready proved to her that he can never be too far away from his music.
