The NHL claims that the debt taken on by the players as part of the 2020 memorandum of understanding to extend the collective bargaining agreement through 2026 — the players took on US$1.1 billion in exchange for controlled future salary-cap growth — will be paid off by the end of this season. That could mean a multimillion-dollar rise in the salary cap next summer, as much as US$3.5 million the NHL projects.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said league revenues last year hit US$5.4 billion, even with disruptions like the emergence of the omicron variant of COVID-19. In the Canucks case, the next windfall would be their regional TV and arena naming-rights deals. Both are expiring next summer, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if an extension of the Canucks’ current relationship with Rogers were to come soon.
Even with the team’s on-ice struggles and the decline in value of regional broadcasts elsewhere in the league, the Canucks remain a strong brand on TV.
