Gilles and Poirier captured gold in both of their ISU Grand Prix assignments, setting the Canadians up as a favourite to claim the Final title this week in Turin, Italy

But Gilles and Poirier, who had pondered retirement last summer, haven’t paused to reflect on their terrific season so far. They’re much too busy for that.

Gilles and Poirier won their Grand Prixs – Skate Canada International and Grand Prix Espoo – with the two highest scores in the world this year. Their best of 219.49 two weeks ago in Finland is nearly six points better than Italy’s Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri. Canadians Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps of were third after Thursday’s pairs short program, with 69.34 points.

“It’s great, that shows that Canada is ready to be strong again,” Gilles said. “I think it shows that Canada is really developing a strong group of teams behind us. It’s exciting.”

To ease the housing crisis, keep building outside the boxTo ease the housing crisis, keep building outside the boxWe all know that housing is at crisis levels in Canada.  It’s taking longer than ever for most young people to afford a down payment. A year of interest rate hikes to fight inflation has only made it harder by driving up mortgage rates. At the same time, the cost of construction and the cost of land in most of Canada’s growth areas remains close to peak levels.  The Government of Canada has taken steps to provide some assistance to Canadians, introducing the Tax-Free First Home Savings Account to help first-time home buyers build up a down payment. While this assistance is undoubtedly helpful to some prospective homeowners, it isn’t a solution for the broader issues of dwindling supply and ever-rising prices.  In Ontario, the provincial government has passed legislation to increase supply by opening up previously protected greenspaces for development and giving greater authority to mayors in some of the larger municipalities, all in an effort to bring more supply to the market faster.  In the longer term, both initiatives may relieve the housing crisis, but building new developments and saving up down payments may take longer than struggling Canadians can afford. In the short term, Canadians will continue to be frustrated by the search for affordable, safe, and stable housing.  As Canadians embark on that search, the results continue to be troubling. The second quarter of 2022, for example, saw the worst quarterly housing affordability deteriorations in more than 40 years. Today, 15 per cent of Canadians experience hidden homelessness—living with family, friends, or somewhere else because they don’t have anywhere else to live.  Most troubling, though, is that numbers like these don’t capture just how dire the housing crisis has become in remote and Indigenous communities. In these areas, housing issues lead to a more significant crisis of a lack of human rights, health, and dignity. A recent report from Statistics Canada indicates the housing crisis in northern Cana
