The Canadian women’s national soccer team coach, has a number of kids sprinkled in with a veteran lineup for the two games against Brazil.
Among the 25 players on the roster are three — Annabelle Chukwu, 15, Amanda Allen, 17, and Ella Ottey, 17 — who were all members of Canada’s entry in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India last month.
The two games are part of the journey to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer. Canada was drawn into a group with co-hosts Australia, Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland. “That’s a lot for a young player, but I’m excited about where they’ll be with more investment. All three have really excited me and haven’t looked out of place.”
Leon is joining the club on particularly good form, having scored three goals in a two-match series against Australia this past September. Leon is currently playing with Manchester United in England. Leon, 30, a Mississauga, Ont., product, has 27 goals in 89 appearances for Canada. Beckie with 36 and Christine Sinclair at a record 190, are the only two active players who have scored more for Canada.
Brazil has always presented a tough challenge for Canada and Priestman expects a quality two-game series from them. Brazil will also take part in the 2023 World Cup, drawn into a group with France, Jamaica, Brazil and the playoff winner between Chinese Taipei, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea and Panama.
