On the second day of the ISU World Cup competition at the Olympic Oval in Calgary, Dubreuil breezed through in a time of 34.10 in the 500m on Saturday, .03 slower than the winning performance by Korea’s Jun-Ho Kim. Second was young American Jordan Stolz, just .01 slower than Kim.Article content
“You have to be great and consistently great,” Dubreuil pointed out. “That’s how you win a season title; showing up every week, getting points. You don’t have to win many races but … you need your worst race to be really good.”“And to win the overall in the 1000, as well, which I’ve never done,” he added. ‘So I’m on track to do it. People look at the overall to see who’s the best skater in the world. My goal has always to be the best in the world.
“He’s much more talented than me, so I think it’s just a matter of time until I don’t win anymore,” he smiled. “To win medals in the 500 and the 1500 on the same weekend — he’s the favourite for tomorrow’s 1000 for sure — it’s something that only a very few skaters have done in their absolute prime and he’s doing it at 18. I think it’s incredible. I think he’s the most talented skater of the last 40, 45 years. I’ve never seen something like that.
“For me, I’m not as fast a sprinter as these two girls,” suggested Blondin, who crossed the finish. “The last lap is everything out on the line for me and just go as hard as I can.”Article content
