When Billy Mustapha took the stage Sunday night at the 95th Academy Awards, he never expected the performance would end with a standing ovation.
A post shared by Variety “When I was young, my parents were always encouraging my siblings and I to have a ‘thing,'” he recalls. “I tried many sports but it wasn’t until I went to my sister’s dance recital that I realized that I wanted to be in dance classes. I was choreographing dances with my friends and cousins from a young age but once I started a musical theatre class at Dance Spectrum, I quickly enrolled in every genre they offered.
“Projects of this prestigious calibre do not come around often, so I did everything in my power to ensure my audition video was as strong as possible,” he says. “Filming my audition tape in my cousin’s gym across the globe is a memory I will never forget.” Mustapha’s moves netted him a lead dance role in the Oscars performance. Rehearsals began just five days before the event, he shares, an element of his Academy Awards experience that he earmarks as a surprise.
“Having that short amount of time to learn the dance, learn the song, make adjustments for the camera, understand our props/wardrobe and co-ordinate it on one of the biggest stages in the world was a challenge that I am very grateful I got to experience,” he says. As for what’s next for the professional dancer, Mustapha is looking to keep his feet moving, auditioning for new dance roles as he continues to ride high on the energy of his Oscars performance.
