Canada's largest indoor fireplace set to call the new BMO Centre home yyc
“We thought, what’s more important than having that in a venue that is all about sharing stories, learnings, successes and failures. And so that’s why this became such a prominent feature.”The fireplace, which will be powered by water vapour instead of natural gas, is set to become Canada’s largest indoor fireplace, Newton said. The facade will be built out of copper and blackened steel harkening back to a time of blacksmiths and the nostalgia of the penny press.
“It kind of plays off of both the western and the settling of the west, but also the history of the Calgary Stampede and the fair nature of it so those materials really echo a lot into what we’re doing,” Newton said.Article content Kelly Coles, vice president of design and construction at the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation, said designing the expansion to be a reflection of the Stampede itself was key to anchoring the building to the grounds and the city as a whole.
“The general public would understand the Stampede brand as agriculture and horses, cowboys and the Midway and 10-day festival but I would say this building embodies the Stampede in a less literal way,” she said. “The materials selected for the ground floor, they’re a little more hardy, more what we refer to as the grit of Stampede … And the second level brings more open – not just from an accessibility standpoint but visually open and philosophically open … Then the top layer of the building represents more of the aesthetic of Stampede, that copper patina that has the feel of barn board without actually being barn board.
