Canada pulls out win in final exhibition match before 2022 FIFA World Cup Via DerekVanDiest at Qatar2022

Cavallini stepped up to take the penalty awarded to Canada three minutes into second-half extra time, when substitute Richie Laryea was tripped by Japan captain Gaku Shibasaki, who outside the foul, had an excellent game.

Canada’s forward Lucas Cavallini scores a goal during a friendly football match between Canada and Japan at Al-Maktoum Stadium in Dubai on November 17, 2022. For Cavallini, who is looking for a club team after the Vancouver Whitecaps cut him loose at the end of this past MLS season, the kick almost blew up in his face, as Japan goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda, diving to his left, was able to get a hand on the shot, but it still just crossed the goal line.

The most encouraging sign for Canada against Japan was having Hutchinson back on the field. Hutchinson, 39, has recovered from a preseason leg injury in time to play in the World Cup for Canada. He wore the captain’s armband in 60 minutes of playing time and will likely get it again on Wednesday, to exchange pleasantries at midfield for the coin toss with Belgian captain Eden Hazard.

Against Japan, Herdman was without star winger Alphonso Davies and it’s not beyond the realm of possibility of sitting him out against Belgium either. Canada’s back four against Japan will likely be the unit who starts against Belgium, with Steven Vitoria and Kamal Miller in the middle, Sam Adekugbe on the left and Johnston on the right.

Canada tied the game in just over 10 minutes later when Hoilett swung in a corner from the right to the far post, where Hutchinson got a touch to it and Vitoria muscled it past Gonda.
