OTTAWA — Ukrainians seeking refuge from war in Canada will have another few months to apply for temporary safe haven, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser ann
The deadline to apply for a three-year emergency visa was originally March 31, but Ukrainians and their family members will now be able to apply until July 15.
Ukrainians who have received an emergency visa will have until March 31 next year to make the journey to Canada, where the federal government will offer them a one-time income support payment and two weeks of hotel accommodations. The extension to the program will give people in the settlement sector some certainty and allow Ukrainians to keep their options open, he said in an interview Friday.
“We are hopeful that the situation will improve, with the military defence support that Canada and other allies are offering Ukraine, and we hope that people are able to start thinking about planning to go home in the near future,” he said.In the meantime, Fraser said the time limits on applications and arrivals helps the department to manage the immigration system with some level of certainty.
