Bev Priestman is stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place in the labour dispute between the women’s national team and Canada Soccer.
The tournament will be played in protest according to Canada captain Christine Sinclair, as the team was threatened with litigation if they did not take the field for the four-team event.
Going into the two-week training camp to prepare for the four-team SheBelieves Cup, hosted by the United States women’s national team, a pay dispute broke out between the Canadian players and their association. Following the game against the United States on Thursday, Canada will play Brazil on Sunday in Nashville, Tenn., and conclude the tournament against Japan in Frisco, Tex., on Feb. 22.
As reigning Olympic champions, Canada is expected to contend for a championship at the upcoming Women’s World Cup. The SheBelieves Cup is supposed to represent the start of that journey towards Australia and was expected to provide a good gauge for the team heading forward, facing the defending Women’s World Cup champions, the best team in Asia and best team in South America.
“The Sophie conversation, to be honest, was a little soul destroying for me,” Priestman said. “You talk about what Sophie has gone through, and I think what I’ve seen with Sophie is an incredible character and at times, is the best trainer of this team on the pitch with the values and the respect that Sophie has shown in the most difficult circumstances.Article content
