CanMNT captain Atiba Hutchinson finally gets to play in FIFAWorldCup
“The first moments of me realizing how big the World Cup was, was 1994,” Hutchinson said Tuesday. “I really was into that one; I followed it a lot and my team that I was going for was Brazil and they ended up winning.
Yet, despite the turmoil and frustration, Hutchinson, 39, kept offering himself to the program and, in a career spanning nearly 20 years, has put on the Canada jersey a record 98 times. “It’s going to be a battle every game we play, we’re going to fight, we’re going to show our brotherhood and we want to put Canada on the map. Our intentions are to enjoy the moment, we’ve worked a very long time to get here and tomorrow it all starts. We’ll be together and show our brotherhood we have and we’ll be very well prepared as John always has us well prepared so I’m looking forward to it.
“I’ve seen it sparking a lot of interest in younger players, seven, eight years olds, some in my family; teammates children and the interest that it’s brought to our country, it’s really special to see,” he said. “I’ve been with the national team a very long time and I’ve never seen it get to this level. It’s great to see and I think it’s going to continue to get bigger and bigger from here on out.
“I think it’s something we’ll learn from, and more importantly, we’re going to really go to war. I think that’s the opportunity we have here, coming into a game like this, we don’t have a great amount to lose, just genuine opportunity to make it our Cup final and that’s what it is for Canada.”
