Calgary arts in 2022: The year things returned to normal (almost) yyc
While 2022 would eventually see the return of festivals and big shows to Calgary, the year nevertheless began with more pandemic-related bummer news. Specifically, it was the cancellation of The High Performance Rodeo in January. The Big Winter Classic and Chinook Blast were also postponed. On top of that, The Calgary Philharmonic cancelled a number of its early 2022 performances. Certain shows scheduled for the High Performance Rodeo did happen in May.
In March, cameras began rolling on High School. The comedy-drama is based on the memoir by twin pop stars Tegan and Sara Quin and offered the rare opportunity for Calgary to play Calgary, albeit in the 1990s. The series, which starred identical twins Railey and Seazynn Gilliland as Tegan and Sara, respectively, debuted Oct. 28 on Prime Video. It was a busy time for the Quin sisters, who returned to their hometown for filming as the show’s executive producers.
It was also a big year for the Glenbow Museum, even if it temporarily shuttered while undergoing a $120-million renovation. In April, the family of Calgary entrepreneur, philanthropist and businessman JR Shaw donated $35 million to the Glenbow, most of which will be used to allow the museum to permanently offer free admission. It is the largest donation the museum has received since opening in 1976.
