This is not the first time Mayr has been in the sites of Giller. Her 2011 breakthrough, Monoceros, was longlisted, making her part of Calgary’s impressive history with the literary prize. The city has always managed to punch above its weight in this arena, particularly in recent years. So here is a short history of Calgarians, or Calgary-related books, making the shortlist of Canada’s most lucrative literary award.
Calgary writers Marina Endicott and Fred Stenson at a literary awards reception in 2009. Endicott was nominated for a Giller in 2008 for Good to a Fault while Stenson was nominated in 2000 for The Trade.Fred Stenson is officially based in Cochrane but has been part of the Calgary/Alberta literary landscape for years. He is well-known as a storyteller steeped in Alberta history.
