Cake & Loaf Gatherings is Nickey Miller and Josie Rudderham’s second cookbook.Rudderham started hosting multi-course dinner parties as a teenager and would try to find ways to sneak food into every high school presentation. Even with this early interest, it took some time to arrive at food as a career. She expected to graduate university with a law degree in labour relations but ended up approaching organizational justice from another angle.
“Primarily, we wanted to create a better workplace. And wanted to think about, how do you age in this industry? What does that look like? How do you create careers that allow people to have families? And how do you make sure that work-life balance is a real thing? It’s not just something you talk about. It’s something that people can actually enjoy,” says Rudderham.
Inspired by a community supported bakery Rudderham had come across in Britain, as well as the community supported agriculture model small-scale farmers were using, they had Rudderham’s home kitchen licensed and started what they believe to be Canada’s first CSB program.
