After the last chocolate egg has been consumed and straw baskets hit the donation pile, live rabbits still require care. Their needs unfamiliar to most, many of these rabbits are destined for the shelter or a surreptitious drop-off in a local green space.
, which recently wrapped a rabbit adoption campaign that aimed to encourage interest in finding homes by waiving adoption fees.
Rabbits are regular residents at THS. As of the beginning of April, the River Street shelter was at capacity for rabbits, with 46 in its care — At THS, the number of rabbit surrenders is up — less than four months into 2023, the shelter has had 27 surrenders, more than half of last year’s total. It also saw in 2022 a 63 per cent increase of stray rabbits over the previous year.
“In late March, Toronto Animal Services had a large number of rabbits in their care,” said Alex Burke, a communications manager for the City of Toronto.
